The Lilongwe TNM Super League derby involving Silver Strikers and Civo United grossed a meager K3.5 million at Civo Stadium on Sunday.
Surprisingly, At the same stage last season, the derby grossed K5 million at Silver Stadium. And weeks ago Silver Strikers’ game against Mighty Be Forward Wanderers grossed K10.6 million.
Silver and Civo each earned K 654,000, whereas the rest of the money was shared among Super League of Malawi (Sulom) and other stakeholders.
About K23.2 million were generated in gate collections during first week of league football.
The 2016 league kicked-off with a game between the 2015 champions Nyasa Big Bullets and Mzuzu-based soldiers Moyale Barracks which grossed K10.8 million followed by a thriller between Silver Strikers against Mighty Be Forward Wanderers which grossed K10.6 million.
he game between Kamuzu Barracks and Civo United grossed K367, 430, while Dwangwa United and Blue Eagles game in Chitowe grossed K440, 000.
In a game involving Red Lions and Epac FC which took place in Balaka, the gross was K192,500, while Azam Tigers and Max Bullets game at Kamuzu Stadium the gross was K542,500. Mafco FC and Mzuni game in Chitowe raised K220, 000.
The 2016 season kicked off on high note for some teams while others struggled to live up to expectations and assimilate the pressure from their respective fans.
