Kukoma Diamonds on Saturday afternoon outclassed fellow Blantyre-based netball giants, Tigresses to lift the K360-million Airtel Money Netball trophy for the first time since the tournament was launched two years ago.
Kukoma diamonds formally MTL Queens booked themselves into the finals after trouncing Blue Eagles 47-34 on Friday while Tigresses formally Compress Tigresses reached the finals after narrowly edging out Civo by 40 baskets to 37.
The finals played at Don Bosco in Lilongwe saw Kukoma Diamonds deflecting the dominance Tigresses had created in the tournament to pocket K7 million as winning prize.
Tigresses managed to secure third straight Airtel Money tournament finals, but failed to their history to become the first team to win the trophy three consecutive times.
Surprisingly, Tigresses coach Peace Kaluwa took a different stand and accused officials for being biased in how they handled the game.
By the winning the trophy, Kukoma Diamonds now became the first netball team to win all major trophies in a year.
They are also title holders of Presidential Cup and GOtv Netball Champions League. The team is sponsored by Cori Oil Industry who produces Kukoma cooking oil.
