The country’s national football and netball teams’ 2016/17 national budget allocations have been deducted by almost 68 percent.
In the last year budget, Flames was given k100 million while the Queens received k101 million while in this year’s budget, yet to be approved by Parliament, the teams have been allocated K32 million each.
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Walter Nyamilandu said that the budget cut will surely force the Flames not to participate in various tournaments.
Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Dowa East Member of Parliament (MP) Richard Chimwendo-Banda has asked the Ministry of Finance to allocate more funding to the Ministry of Sports and Culture.
The MP attributed the Flames’ poor performance in continental and world competitions to poor funding.
“The Flames have been failing to participate in so many tournaments and they have been not well prepared as well due to lack of resources. That is why our national team is not doing very well,” he lamented.
