Flames Date ‘Zebras’ As FAM Needs K80 Million For AFCON

Malawi the Flames are expected to play the Zebras of Botswana in an international friendly match scheduled for Botswana on 28th May, 2016.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) General Secretary Suzgo Nyirenda has confirmed the development.

Nyirenda said the match is part of preparations for the team ahead of its African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tie against Zimbabwe slated the first week of June.

The association is expected to announce a call up of players to report for training camp on Sunday 22nd May at the Mpira House in Blantyre.

According to the FAM General Secretary, the camping will involve both local and professional players and the list of players will be released by 9am on Thursday.

He further revealed that the local soccer governing body needs a funding of about K80 million to enable the Flames prepare as well as travel to Zimbabwe for the AFCON qualifier.

Meanwhile, FAM is in discussions with Malawi Council of Sports and government to raise the needed funding.

Nyirenda has further asked well wishers to support the Flames despite the team having very slim chances of qualifying to the next phase.

The Flames were rescued by South African based but Malawian born prophet Shepherd Bushiri of the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) through a K44 million donation to enable it play their back to back AFCON qualifying matches against Guinea.
