The Opposition Peoples Party(PP) has asked government to trade carefully on the legalization of Industrial Hemp locally known as Chamba.
PP’s Publicity Secretary Kenneth Msonda made the appeal on Friday after Parliament adopted a motion by Ntchisi North Lawmaker Boniface Kadzamira to legalize cultivation of industrial hemp in Malawi.
Msonda said that government and other concerned stakeholders have a huge role to play in civic educating Malawians on industrial Hemp.
”We call upon government and otherwise stakeholders to seriously address the medical Chamba misconception otherwise some people will start smoking the illegal prohibited Chamba,” said Msonda.
He added that,”This type of Chamba is used for medical research and development in developed countries; it has the potential to bring the much needed foreign currency in our country.”
Last year the Director and Founder Of Invegrow Limited Company, Tanya Clarke said that Industrial hemp can help to change the economic status of the country.
‘’ Industrial Hemp is not for smoking but rather used for commercial purposes and this will help our country make millions. It should also be commercially exploited for the good of Malawi and its people.’’
Further said that,”Industrial hemp is a crop that has extremely exciting economic potential and support the national export strategy of oil seed cluster in Malawi. There is a large potential in the raw products such as construction, cosmetics, food stuffs and medicine.’’
According to a World Bank report Malawian hemp is among “the best and finest” marijuana strains in the world, generally regarded as one of the most potent psychoactive pure African sativa.
Malawi Parliament has adopted a motion which, among others, wants industrial hemp to be recognized as an agricultural cash crop for industrial purposes distinct from other cannabis varieties.
