Some Members of Parliament (MPs) have called for the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) to institute investigations against Public Appointments Committee of Parliament (PAC) chairman over allegations of massive corruption.
PAC’s Chairperson Lingston Belekanyama is alleged to have pocketed K3 million from Minister of Labour Henry Mussa to facilitate the appointment of his daughter and wife for diplomatic positions.
Mussa’s wife, Agrina Mussa has been appointed as Malawi’s High Commissioner in Kenya, while the daughter has been appointed to serve in Malawi’s embassy in Zimbabwe.
“Honourable Belekanyama is very corrupt. He and some of his close allies in the committee have turned the committee into a fundraising machine for themselves in these harsh economic times,” said our source at parliament.
The source said the opposition was expected to turn down the appointment of Agrina Mussa because she is wife to a cabinet minister and also she had held such a position before in South Africa.
“The opposition was of the view that there are many Malawians out there who should be given such opportunities to hold the position. What is so special about the Mussa family,” said our source.
President Peter Mutharika’s administration has been rocked with scandals of nepotism and cronyism.
