The much anticipated naked demonstrations against the continued abductions and killings of people with albinism are set for Thursday 23rd June in Lilongwe, it has been confirmed.
The demonstrations which are receiving overwhelming support from the public are being organized by Mulanje South Member of Parliament Elias Bon Kalindo famously known as Winiko.
According to one of the country’s civil activists, Billy Mayaya, the demonstrations will start at 7am in Lilongwe.
“The planned route is from Lilongwe Community Centre ground to Parliament Building where a petition will be read and thereafter demonstrators will peacefully demonstrate,” wrote Mayaya on his Facebook page.
Those interested to participate have been advised to put on red underwear, bras or bikini tops
“Those who feel shy are free to wear anything red. We want our brothers and sisters living with albinism to join us as we demand that the State respects and protects their rights as citizens of Malawi,” he added.
Letters of notification about the demonstrations are expected to be delivered to the Lilongwe District Council, Lilongwe City Council and Lilongwe Police in compliance with the law.
Kalindo is calling for law-makers to reinstate death sentence which was suspended due to international human rights covenants despite it being enacted in the country’s law.
He argues that those involved in abduction and killing of people with albinism should face death sentence in order to curb the malpractice which has shaken the country.
