Nsanje Magistrate court has today passed a 2years and 10 months jail sentence to Nsanje based sexual ritualist- ‘Fisi’ Eric Aniva.
Aniva was convicted last Friday on two charges which are engaging in harmful practices and an attempt to commit the same which are contrary to section 5 of the Gender Equality Act.
Principal resident magistrate Innocent Nebi delivered the sentence on Tuesday afternoon to a jam packed court in the lower shire.
According to Nebi, Malawi being a signatory to number of agreements that aim at ending harmful practices there is a need to take positive steps towards ending such practices.
But commenting on the sentence the defence team led by Michael Goba Chipeta says they are going to appeal against ruling at the High Court.
Aniva was arrested in July following President Peter Mutharika’s command to have him tried after he allegedly confessed to BBC that he had slept with over 100 women including girls as part of cultural ritual cleansing.
