A Catholic Brotherhood student at Mtendere Campus in Dedza district has killed himself by hanging in a toilet after being sick for some time.
The student Horacio Pedro Augusto Mitengo aged 20 years old and a Mozambican nationality committed suicide on Tuesday morning at Champagnat House within Catholic-owned Mtendere Campus, Dedza.
Police have confirmed the incident and said there were no foul play circumstances leading to the death of the deceased.
Mitengo, who was a Brotherhood student at the Champagnat Catholic communion institution, was admitted of Malaria to Mtendere Mission Hospital for two days and was discharged on Monday 25th April, 2016.
“He was discharged after recovery. He seemed alright until Tuesday morning when he left his room as if he wanted to relieve himself in one of the toilets at the institution,” explained Brother Semion Band who reported the incident to law-enforcers.
According to Banda, Mitengo did not return to his room until he was found dead, hanging to the roof of the toilet.
In a related incident, a second year student at Malawi University 0f Science and Technology (M UST) Aulelino Malamusi has also killed himself by hanging.
Dedza Police spokesperson Edward Kabango has confirmed of the incident, saying he was in the campus to his parents’ house after he was sent back home from school because of fees balance.
Malamusi was staying within Mtendere campus with his father who works as a teacher at Mtendere Secondary School.
Police said the deceased on 25 April he left home to one of the drinking joints and returned late at night.
He started throwing stones at his parent’s house. Later in the morning he was discovered dead hanging in a kitchen.
Postmortem results showed that both died due to strangulation.
Recently it was reported that Mtendere campus was infested with mosquitoes which were causing Malaria to students, Brothers and teachers at the campus.
