Police in Nkhotakota are keeping in custody six men for allegedly killing an elephant in Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve.
Nkhotakota Police spokesperson Williams Kaponda said park and wildlife officers on Friday arrested one suspect after well-wishers tipped them off that the man was selling elephant meat.
“After the arrest, the suspect revealed the other five suspects who were also arrested inside the reserve. Apart from being found in possession of the elephant meat, the suspects were also found with an axe, two rifles and gun powder,” said Kaponda.
He said the suspects will soon appear before court to answer charges of hunting and killing protected species, illegal possession of firearms, illegal entry into protected area and conveying dangerous weapons into wildlife reserve without permit.
The suspects are Sakondwera Buda (32) from Nganga Village, Buggard Nyirenda (53) from Kajontha Village, Mcdonald Chunga (27) from Kambani Village, Yefete Kaluma (28) from Kaomba Village, Yoswa Banda (52) from Tewete Village. All the five hail from T/A Kapelula in Kasungu.
The other suspect is Ephraim Banda, 48, from Mazwini Village, T/A Mabulabo in Mzimba district.–MANA
