Police in Dedza district and their counterparts in Mozambique are currently hunting for a witch-doctor implicated in the abduction and killing of a 17-year-old albino boy, Fletcher Machinjiri who was reported missing two weeks ago.
Malawi Punch firstly reported about Machinjiri’s mysterious disappearance on Thursday (21st April, 2016).
Machinjiri, a standard seven pupil at Thete Primary School in the district, went to watch football at Thete football ground, but never returned home. And now police have arrested two men for allegedly abducting and killing him.
According to Dedza Police Public Relations Edward Kabango the suspects are Vuto Bizwick and Manuel Robert who hail from Chimoto village, TA Kaphuka and Kadambala village, TA Kachere respectively.
The suspects are said to have taken the boy to a witch doctor in Mozambique where they killed him.
Kabango said with the help of Mozambican police they are looking for a 68-year-old witch doctor and his son who are currently on the run in Mozambique.
United Nations Independent Expert on albinism Ikponwosa Ero, who was recently in the country on a fact finding mission on the uncivilized trends in Malawi, has called on Malawi to declare state of disaster on albinos’ right to life.
Fretcher Machinjiri hailed from Nambirikira village in the area of T/A Kachere, Dedza.
Malawi has been grappling with brutal attacks and exhuming of graves of people with albinism which has attracted the attention of global organizations such as the Amnesty International as well as the United Nations-UN.
The barbaric attacks are connected to unjustified get-rich-quick traditional beliefs which experts blame on rampant poverty and lack of political decisive action.
