Police Blames Accidents On Extended Holiday

Malawi police have attributed an increase in road accident during this year’s Independence Day celebrations due to an extension of the holiday to two days.

Four people have lost their lives and two others seriously injured in road accidents that during this year’s Independence Day celebrations.

Apart from Independence Day holiday, Malawians were accorded an extra day off following Eid-al-fitr celebrations.

According to Police, six accidents occurred this year, four more than last year.

Out of the six accidents, four occurred in the northern region with central and eastern regions registering one each.

“Southern region had no accident during this period under review,” said national Police spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa.

Four accidents were fatal where four people lost their lives while the remaining two accidents were serious ones where two people suffered serious injuries.
