Over 180 Malawians coming from South Africa are stranded at Zimbabwe’s Beitbridge Border for failing to pay the required passage fee on each passing vehicle at the border.
One of the stranded Malawians Madalitso Akimu who is also a driver of one of the denied vehicles informed Malawi Punch that almost 15 vehicles carrying people and property are being repudiated to pass the border.
“We have spent close to two weeks here at the Zimbabwe border and the border authorities here are demanding over US$ 25000 from each vehicle passing,” said Akim
He also said for many years the authorities in Zimbabwe were asking them to fill a blue form to show they are on transit when passing through the borders of Zimbabwe and the authorities in Zimbabwe have now started demanding money for each vehicle carrying people and goods that is passing their borders.
However the principal secretary for the ministry of foreign affairs Madalitso Kabambe says the Malawi Embassy in Harare has not been alerted of the matter but assured to follow up with their Zimbabwean counterparts.
