An angry mob on Wednesday night killed a 30 year old man suspected of stealing in a shop at Mitundu Trading Centre in Lilongwe.
Confirming the killing with the Malawi News Agency (Mana) on Thursday, Lilongwe Police Station Public Relation officer (PRO) Inspector Kingsley Dandaula said that the man was drilling one of the shops’ brick wall at Mitundu market with the intention to steal.
“The deceased was using a Panga Knife and other sharp objects to drill the wall, fortunately he was caught by the villagers after they heard a noise around the shop, however, the villagers took the law into their hands and killed the suspect,” said the PRO.
The Police have identified the deceased person as Anthony Milimbi from Keliasi village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Kalumbu in Lilongwe.
Meanwhile the body is pending post-mortem at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe and Police are warning members of the general public that mob justice is a crime.
