An irate mob on Thursday torched to death a suspected thief in Machinjiri Township, police have confirmed.
Limbe Police assistant Public Relations Officer Widson Nhlane told Times television that the thief, whose details are not yet known, broke into a house of one of the residents in the township and stabbed the owner on the neck with a screw driver after he resisted to give the burglar money.
The owner of the house- name not mentioned- managed to scream for help, and other residents came to his rescue, apprehended the suspected thief before burning him to death.
Nhlane said investigations are underway to arrest those involved in torching the suspected thief.
“I should remind members of the general public that taking the law into their hands is an offence because it is only the court that finds one guilty,” warned Nhlane.
