Police in Kasungu district have arrested a 37-year-old man identified as Meja Phiri for soliciting money from people who their relatives died mysteriously, claiming that he would bring them back to life.
Phiri came to Chipanga Trading Centre in Kasungu from Mchinji district, police said, where he was plying his business as a herbalist. Whilst in Kasungu, he was invited by a relative of the deceased who died mysteriously to bring him back to life.
This was after the relative of deceased got the wind that the suspect have magical powers to bring to life dead people.
Phiri, on May 7th, is said to have pocketed K129,000 from a 50-year-old woman who wanted her dead son to be brought back to life. Initially, Phiri had demanded K500,000 from the woman.
After some days, the woman realized that she had been tricked by suspect and reported the matter to Kasungu Police who immediately arrested him.
So far, police in Kasungu have registered at least eight complaints on the same against Phiri.
Meja Phiri has been charged with Theft by Trick which is contrary to Section 271 of the Penal Code.
Phiri comes from Malaza village under Traditional Authority Malanga in Nkhatabay district.
