Man Arrested For Ridiculing Person With Albinism In Lilongwe

Lingadzi Police are keeping in custody James Makina, 25, suspected of inhumanely ridiculing a 19-year-old man with albinism at Kang’oma in Lilongwe.

The arrest comes in the wake of the action week on fighting crimes against people with albinism.

Lilongwe Police Station Spokesperson Inspector Kingsley Dandaula identified the man with albinism as Julius Ngangula from Mpando village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Mpando in Ntcheu district.

“It is alleged that when the suspect saw Ngangula he made some ridicule statement saying, ‘this person is better off sold for easy money’. The statement annoyed him and he reported the matter to Lingadzi Police,” said Dandaula.

The suspect has been charged with conduct likely to cause breach of peace contrary to section 181 of the penal code.

In a related development, Kawale Police on Monday, May 22 2016 also arrested two women suspected of inhumanely mocking a 13 year-old girl with albinism, Lilian Tongani in Kaliyeka in Lilongwe.

Lilongwe Police Station Spokesperson Inspector Kingsley Dandaula identified the two suspects as Olivia Mangani, 26, from Mtiya village, TA Mulumbe and Beatrice Chintondo, 35, from Mkando village, from the same area in Zomba district.

On March 26 2016, Kawale Police also arrested Lucius Mantha 21 from Ndaona village, (TA) Nsabwe in Thyolo district for verbally attacking Robert Banda, 30, a person with albinism.

In recent months, there have been growing fears among persons with albinism due to the increase of cases of abductions and killings of people with the condition especially in Machinga, Zomba, Blantyre, Dedza and Mulanje.

Lilongwe Police are warning members of the general public that the law shall take its course on any person issuing inhumane threats towards persons with albinism.-MANA
