The Lilongwe Resident Magistrate Court on Monday refused to grant bail to Lawyer Chrispine Kam’mayani who was arrested for alleged K10 million fraud.
Kam’mayani has been on the ran for one and half years for fear of being arrested for fraud after he, on January 8th, 2015, signed a document to guarantee the seller of plot number 47/4/820 using fake names.
He claimed the plot belonged to Mercy Chitamo and yet the real owner of the plot is Monica Chitawo, and he allegedly pocketed K10 million from Chimwemwe Sibande out of the illegal deal.
Kam’mayani sold the plot to Sibande, and later on sent an SMS that he will refund the misappropriated money, but never did until the owner took it up with the police.
On Monday the court refused to grant him bail instead he has been remanded to Maula Prison pending trial on fraud charges.
The court argued that Kam’mayani failed to surrender himself to police despite knowing that they were looking for him.
In February last year the police arrested Kam’mayani’s wife and charged her with bribery after her attempts to bribe Police officers were foiled.
The wife wanted to bribe Lilongwe Police Station officer with K40, 000 after noticing that they were hunting for her husband on fraud charge.
But Police officers rejected her bid and later locked her up.
