Former President Joyce Banda has teamed up with controversial South African-based prophet Shepherd Bushiri to a new political party to be named Enlightened Christian Party (ECP), Malawi Punch can reveal.
Banda who is the founder of the Peoples Party (PP) and currently in a self-imposed exile in United States is using Bushiri and some local pastors to set a new political landmark by establishing a political grouping.
Bushiri who is rumored to be harboring ambitions to vie for presidency come 2019 has already started doing ground work using his Pretoria-based Enlightened Christian Gathering church, and with help of former minister and attorney general Ralph Kasambara, Prophet Elias Mussa Gama and former PP executive member and minister Brown Mpinganjira.
Mpinganjira, Gama and Kasambara have meanwhile organized 50 pastors who are set to travel to South Africa to meet Bushiri and Banda’s representatives in a bid to win their support and sell them the idea of forming the new political party.
Banda and Bushiri have decided to align their political group with Christian fraternity to ensure they have an edge over President Peter Mutharika of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leader Lazarus Chakwera come 2019.
Banda, who once visited and testified at Bushiri’s church, has pulled together resources to ensure that her son in marriage, Bushiri has all the support he needs in Malawi to establish the new political party, which eventually Bushiri himself will lead as president.
Cecilia Kumpukwe who is Banda’s sister is the one who has been tasked to make all necessary arrangements and make sure that everything moves on smoothly.
