Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) on Wednesday seized a bag containing drugs believed to be Ephedrine powder at Chileka International Airport in Blantyre.
The drugs, according to the Authority’s Deputy Director Corporate Affairs Steven Kapoloma, were concealed in eleven board games inscribed as snakes and ladders, chess and darts in order to be beat the security system.
The owner of the bag is believed to be Annie Maniya who is at large. Maniya is believed to have alighted from an Ethiopian Airlines on May 28th, 2016 and left the bag unattended at the airport.
MRA officers took the bag and stored it in the Lost and Found warehouse and hoped the owner would show up to claim the bag, but to no avail.
And Wednesday, the Authority’s officers, after two weeks of waiting, opened the bag in the presence of the Police specialized in drugs and found out that the bag contained Ephedrine.
The bag has been handed over to the Police for further investigations.
Apart from revenue collection, MRA has a key role in counteracting tax fraud and other forms of fiscal evasion and protecting citizens from dangerous and harmful goods and substances imported into the country.
