Unconfirmed reports that Malawi Punch has gathered indicate that the Malawi Army has deployed heavy security at the Vice President’s residence in area 12.
Yesterday, there was a questionable number of vehicles arriving and leaving the state house in Lilongwe. Nothing has been confirmed yet and it is yet to be established at to why the army has intensified security at Veep’s house.
Last time Malawi Army put up a similar action was in 2012 when army personnel were deployed to guard the then Vice President Madam Joyce Banda following the death of Bingu Mutharika.
Malawi President is currently in the USA on official trip despite rumours that he has been unwell. Breaking the lip was Gerald Kampanikiza, a well known whistle-blower who wrote on his Facebook that the President was unwell in the USA.
“There is heavy security guarding where Mutharika is and people are not allowed to see him a situation which has raised eyebrows and added more weight to the rumour circulating that Mutharika is seriously sick. Security details are not allowed to use their phones as they are all suspects to be leaking info,” wrote Kampanikiza.
He also claimed that Vice President Saulos Chilima who was supposed to leave for US on 29th September cancelled his trip because he was told that Mutharika will not be returning to Malawi soon.
“Chilima was supposed to leave with a team of ten people to the USA, visas and tickets were already purchased for the entire team accompanying him to attend an international event. This confirms the rumours going around about Mutharika’s health, the Veep was aware that Mutharika was coming back soon after the UNGA,” said Kampanikiza.
However, Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon. Kasaila dismissed the rumours saying the President is in good health and conducting business on behalf of Malawians.
