A Kabaza cyclist has died after being hit by a speeding Vanette minibus in Mulanje district, police have confirmed.
Meanwhile, police have arrested the minibus driver for causing the accident that left four other cyclists injured.
The driver Masautso Nkhoma, 38, who comes from Njedza village, T/A Mabuka in Mulanje, was driving a Nissan Vanette registration BR 9231 with about 10 passengers on board.
Police Public Relations Officer in the district Gresham Ngwira confirmed the accident, saying the minibus hit five cyclists at area called Stecco after the driver lost control.
“The minibus was coming from Mulanje Boma going towards Muloza boarder. The driver lost control of the vehicle and hot five cyclists who were going towards same direction,” said Ngwira.
Four of the cyclists sustained minor injuries and were treated as out-patients at Mulanje District Hospital while one, Lesten john 17-years-old, sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival.
Meanwhile the driver has been charged of Causing Death Due to Reckless Driving contrary to section 126 (4c) of Road Traffic Act.
“We urge all road users to be careful while on the road. Each road user (driver, cyclist/pedestrian) should know that he is responsible for both his life and that of other users.”
