A 22-year-old man Anthony John, a bicycle (Kabaza) operator in Mzuzu city is currently on the run for allegedly throwing his biological one year-old boy into the river.
The boy’s body was found floating in Mchengautuwa river on Monday morning and police have since instituted a manhunt for John whose whereabouts are currently not known.
Mzuzu police relations officer, Martin Bwanali said John is prime suspect in the incident as the law-enforcers are still investigating the matter.
Bwanali said the wife to the suspect revealed that on July 20th 2016, around midnight her drunken husband assaulted her and their three-year-old stepson without apparent reason.
The wife managed to escape and sought a refuge at their landlord. The two have been married for two years.
And John is said on the same night; he took his one-year-old biological son and left the house.
He did not return but the child was found dead, floating in a river on Monday morning June 20th, 2016.
A postmortem conducted at Mzuzu Central Hospital indicated that the boy died due to Asphyxia following drowning.
John is expected to answer to the charge of Murder which is contrary to Section 209 of the Penal Code.
