Paramount Chief Kyungu of Karonga district has asked government to declare Karonga District Council, a municipality.
The influential chief made the call on Friday when President Peter Mutharika visited flood victims at Kakoma Camp before conducting a rally at Baka School at the Boma.
He said due to infrastructure development and many economic activities, the busy district is ready for the elevation.
“People of Karonga we have a lot of things happening here. In agriculture, we produce quality Kilombero rice which is very popular around the world.
Our infrastructure was well planned and is fit to be in the city. In short, the town has all qualifications to be a municipality. Therefore, why can’t it just be declared Karonga a municipality?” questioned Kyungu.
He said the district including the Songwe Border is contributing a lot to the nation development.
“We deserve that promotion because we work very hard to develop the district together with the district commissioner’s office, councilors and local people,” argued Kyungu.
However, Mutharika did not respond anything to the call despite being seen taking points when Kyungu made the call.
