Court Slaps Bangwe Township Thief With 15 Years Jail Term

The Midima Senior Resident Magistrate court has sentenced a 33-year-old man to 15 years imprisonment with hard labour for burglary and theft.

Gift Joseph, a Bangwe Township resident committed the offence on Monday last week when he broke into three houses at Laiti village and went away with a cell phone and undisclosed amount of money from the first two houses.

Joseph, a subsequent offender, was caught in the act of stealing in the third house.

In mitigation he asked for leniency citing that he is a sole bread winner of the family.

Magistrate Benedictus Chitsakamile said cases of burglary and theft are rampant, therefore perpetrators of law need to be isolated from the society.

The court slapped Joseph with a stiff punishment to deter would be other offenders.

Joseph hails from Traditional Authority Mkanda in Mulanje district.
