Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court has condemned to four year-jail term a Nigerian national Okechukwu Ogbunobi for illegal importation of a dangerous drug called ephedrine.
Ogbunobi was arrested on May 8th 2016 at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) in Lilongwe from Benin on an Ethiopian Airlines flight with nine kilogrammes (kg) of the drug in his luggage.
KIA Police arrested him after an alert from Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) officers.
Lilongwe chief resident magistrate Ruth Chinangwa said illegal importation of dangerous drugs is an offence in Malawi.
“Illegal drug importation deserves a stiff punishment. I hereby sentence you to serve a four-year jail term with no other option or a fine,” ruled Chinangwa.
In related incident, Police in Lilongwe recently arrested Patricia Nyasulu Okoligwe, 32, wife to a Lilongwe-based Nigerian businessperson for allegedly being found in possession of cocaine.
The law-enforcers had got a tip from the public that the suspect’s husband, Collins Okoligwe, was selling cocaine at their Area 47 residence in Lilongwe.
In July last year, government also deported two Nigerians after the Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court found them guilty of being found in possession of cocaine also at their Area 47 house.
