Businesswoman Caroline Savala has been sentenced to serve seven years in prison by the High Court in Lilongwe for stealing K84 million under the famous Cashgate scandal.
Judge Fiona Mwale slapped Savala with jail term on Monday morning despite her efforts to blame her involvement in the scandal on a childhood friend Florence Chatuwa and former Ministry of Tourism top official, Leonard Kalonga.
The 34-year-old has been blaming Chatuwa and Kalonga, both Cashgate suspects, for dragging her into the scandal.
Kalonga is said to have been collecting 90 percent of the funds Savala once cashed from her Carm Civil Engineering Limited accounts, while she shared the 10 percent with Chatuwa who was the go-between of the two.
Between June and July 2013, Savala received government cheques from Kalonga amounting to K84 million and K44 million.
Savala’s conviction follows another on two Cashgate women former Tourism Principal Secretary Treza Senzani and Angella Katengeza.
