Australian pastor dies after being attacked in Malawi

An Australian pastor with the Salvation Army who was attacked while on a preaching tour in Malawi died in a hospital.

Police spokesperson Superintendent James Kadadzera confirmed that  Salvation Army Major Geoff Friend, 59, was attacked in Blantyre near Keza office park.


He however said police were still investigating the matter.

The pastor reportedly succumbed to his injuries in a hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa last week Wednesday in the presence of his wife and four sons, according to his brother-in-law Peter Walker.

Friend was in Malawi for a five-week preaching tour to train other pastors, but he was attacked he was walking from his hotel to Chichiri shopping mall.

In a statement, Salvation Army described Friend as a well-loved and respected person who dedicated that last 34 years of his life to his ministry in Australia

The group also revealed that Friend was supposed to have speaking engagements in Malawi this month, but they did not divulge further details regarding what happened.

According to Perth-based Salvation Army divisional commander Major Neil Venables, the attack happened during Friend’s second week into the preaching tour.
