Auditor General Stephenson Kamphasa is in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe after he collapsed in his office on Wednesday last week.
Sources at audit office confirmed to the Malawi Punch, Kamphasa has been in ICU since Wednesday last week.
“We rushed him to Kamuzu Central Hospital where he was sent straight to the ICU. He was in a comma by the time was going into ICU. But he regained consciousness four hours later. He has since been diagnosed with high blood pressure (BP) and low sugar”, said the source
Our source disclosed that the Auditor General is under pressure from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) not act on the latest revelation of cash gate.
“Ironically President Peter Mutharika is among the list of 7 top government officials who are being mentioned in the findings. Mr. Kamphasa is therefore battling with his conscious which might have influenced high blood pressure and low sugar,” he said.
People’s Party legislature who is Public Accounts Committee Chairperson Kamlepo Kalua has on several occasions challenged President Peter Mutharika to fire his corrupt ministers to show his government commitment towards ending corruption in the country.
But Mutharika speaking at a rally challenged Kalua to mention names of the ministers he claimed are involved in the latest cash gate scandal or forever remain silent.
Said our source: “Pressure from donors and other stakeholders on Kamphasa to make the report public is contributing to his deteriorating health. He hinted on resigning from his position some three weeks ago”.
A visit to Kamazu Central Hospital by Malawi Punch on Monday afternoon confirmed Kamphasa’s admission as true.
Tight security especially around Intensive Care Unit ward is enough evidence if one visit the hospital right now.
“No one without proper identification is allowed to and from the ICU ward. There are three police officers who are guarding the ward”, said one reporter who visited the hospital this afternoon.
Kamphasa’s illness comes at a time when Malawi is in the dark as when President Peter Mutharika will return home from USA.
