Police in Lilongwe have arrested a 33 year-old Kamuzu Central Hospital nurse Virginia Kalyolyo Thonyiwa for being implicated in a drug theft racket.
The law-enforcers have also arrested two other medical workers at Mtosa Health Centre in Nkhotakota in connection to the same racket.
Thonyiwa was nabbed in connection to 144 boxes of Azithromycin (500 mg tablets) and five boxes of MRDs (Malaria test kits)which were found with Jimmy Potani who alleged to have obtained from her, Lilongwe Police Station spokesperson Kingsley Dandaula said.
The other two health workers arrested are Waliko Kayuni, 32, and Malison Kamalira, 40, who work as a nurse and a health surveillance supervisor, respectively, at Mtosa Health Centre.
The two are said to have allegedly supplied the drugs.
Thonyiwa and her accomplices will appear in court soon to answer theft by public servant charges.
The arrest of these health personnel come barely few days after President Peter Mutharika strongly warned against drug theft in public health facilities.
