Izeki Laid To Rest: Fare-Thee-Well Malawi’s King Of Stand-up Comedy

A hoard of theatre lovers and darling on Tuesday morning converged at Kamuzu Stadium to bid their last respect to the country’s departed comedy Legend, John ‘Izeki’ Nyanga who laid to rest at HHI Cemetery in Blantyre.

Izeki died on Sunday morning after succumbing Mangitis and Tuberculosis. He was re-admitted to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in Blantyre months after he was discharged.

According to the deceased acting partner Eric Mabedi, aka Jakobo, Izeki was anemic and he was put on drip.

Izeki was founding member of Kwathu Drama Group, established in 1980 alongside late Charles Severe, Augustine Mawuwa, Esther Jekete.

Poet Gospel Kazako and Managing Director Zodiak Broadcasting Services (ZBS) said in Izeki, Malawi has lost an icon who was passionate and dedicated to his trade.

And Stand-up comedian Mr Jokes born Andrea Thonyiwa described late Izeki as a founding father who inspired several comedians in the country.

Until his death, Izeki was known as Prophet Z running a prophetic ministry called Synagogue For Hope Church in Ndirande Township in Blantyre.

He was born on June 13 1963; he came from Nyangayathyoka Village, T/A Mabuka in Mulanje.
