Afro-Pop births king: Journey of Don Kalonga

According to the society kings are not made but are born. In music industry, the saying also rules; one cannot make it unless they have an inborn talent otherwise mess in their path career follows.

Born Dickson Don Kalonga Thawani, based in Lilongwe, is one budding multi-talented artist with a promise to landslide the local entertainment scene once his acting and singing talent is embraced.

Don, born in 1991 is an Afro- Pop singer and songwriter who grew up in Lilongwe and ventured into the music industry back in 2006, and has since maintained his birthright.

According to the artist, music has been his life since childhood days and some established local and international artists have helped to shape his career into solid.

“I came up with a song which I featured Vic 1 and then I was featured in Nospa G’s ‘Break Down’ which became famous. In a day- dreaming like manner, I made it with a lot of collaborations with artists like late Mafunyeta, Mr Chance, Pros P, just to mention but a few,” recalled Don.

His decision to be an artist started bearing fruits while in Mangochi where he robbed a lot of hearts with his soulful voice and in the process teamed up with Dan Lu.

“By then my stage name was Dik 1, and I became a household name in Mangochi district. Surprisingly I met Dan Lu who saw potential in me and we jointed in ‘I Need You’ which was produced by Hope Lufani, Dan Lu’s younger brother,” he said.

“In 2012 I released a single titled ‘Ndikamamuona’ with its video, then in 2014 I dropped another single ‘Kodi Ndi Chani with a video as well and both enjoyed airplays.”

With some more hit singles to his credit, Don has also collaborated with Dan Lu in ‘Wanna Marry You’ and Mickey from Nigeria in ‘Kodi Ndi Chani Remix’.

Don has urged his fans to be alert for his new single titled ‘Madam’ and also for his new released video for ‘Wanna Marry You’.
