Kayelekera Guards Boycott Work, Wants Boss Removed

Security staff at Kayelekera uranium mine in Karonga district have started boycotting work due to poor working condition, aside from wanting their General Manager Alex Shelland to deal with Doug McGibbon accused of mistreating them.

McGibbon is accused of firing employees without necessary reasons.

The disgruntled workers revealed that McGibbon was planning of firing current crop of employees to replace with ones in order to training allowances.

Just to train new security guards, McGibbon pockets K500, 000 for a five-day session.

However, the officials at Kayelekera have not commented on the matter.

Since the uranium mine was put under care and maintenance in 2014, the security department has been continuing with their work.

Despite government claims that the China National Nuclear Corporation only owns 25 percent to Kayelekera Uranium Mine, rumors have emerged that Paladin sold its 51 percent shares of the company to the Chinese firm.
