Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) customers have no kind words for the utility body after it shut down its prepaid metering vending system for days without notice.
ESCOM shut down its system which is accessed on various platforms including Airtel Money, TNM Mpamba, M026, Eazy Bank, FMB Mobile and through retails shops like Puma and Peoples, on Friday to carry out maintenance works.
The notice about the shutdown was only posted on the utility body’s Facebook page today (Wednesday May 18th).
“We are carrying out maintenance works on our prepaid metering vending system. As such, we have shut down the system for two hours, from 9AM to 11AM. Customers with prepaid meters will, therefore, not be able to purchase prepaid electricity units from all our selling points during this maintenance period,” reads the notice.
Surprisingly, the system has been down since Friday and lucky ones were able to access it from Puma retail shops though their system was persistently up and down.
Hours ago ESCOM indicated that the system was back online, however, customers continue to face problems.
“How come it is not working?’’ wondered one of the customers Godfrey Chakawera Munthali.
Reports indicate that the system was overwhelmed with traffic due to increase in number of prepaid customers, forcing ESCOM to undertake major upgrade.
